After the excesses of Christmas, many choose to have a dry January and avoid alcohol – well for part of the month at least. There are many who believe that detoxing is a waste of time thinking that as the body detoxes naturally every day, why spend time, effort and money on detoxing products. As a nutritionist I thought I would share my thoughts on the matter and I’ve also included a FREE Green Smoothie Recipe to get you started as well as a special offer to my Vitality Detox Plan.
Our bodies are incredible! It is equipped with a multitude of biological processes that help break down and excrete toxins every minute of every day of your life. However our bodies are very complex and can become overburdened when faced with stress, pollution, toxic load and fatigue and in these cases do not detox so efficiently.
I’d also like you to consider this, think about our evolution over thousands of years and how slowly things have moved on in that time. Now consider the last say 50 years with the growth of the technical era, farming, pesticides, how we grow and process our food etc. A lot has changed in a very short time in evolutionary terms. Have our bodies had enough time to adjust to this? I don’t think so and feel that detoxing should be something we seriously consider to help our bodies cope with the additional stress we put upon it.
Signs you might need to detox are feeling tired and sluggish, digestive discomfort, joint pain, insomnia and headaches.
A detox can be as simple as taking all the challenges out of your diet for a short period of time. I have devised a detox, which involves just this. If you take sugar, alcohol, caffeine, processed food, wheat and dairy out of your diet and eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and lean meat and fish and stay hydrated with lots of water and herbal tea you will feel the benefit after just a week.
By feeding your body lots of nutrient rich food and avoiding the challenging foods mentioned above it means your body can more easily remove unwanted toxins from the body. I suggest trying a highly nutritious green smoothie for breakfast a few times per week. You’ll be surprised how delicious it really is! Here is the recipe if you want to give it a try. (P.S. It might sound like a strange combination of ingredients but everyone who tries it at my workshops is always very pleasantly surprised at how nice it actually is! Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!)
Green Smoothie Recipe:
Half a mango OR handful of berries OR half a papaya
1 small banana
Half an avocado
1 large handful of organic baby spinach leaves
1 tsp RAW cacao powder – full of antioxidants
1 tsp of Spirulina powder or Chlorella Powder or Barley Grass Powder
1 tbsp of Flax Seed Oil – very high omega 3 content
1 tsp bee pollen – great for energy (optional)
2 ice cubes
Blend until smooth. The texture will be thick to eat with a spoon but if you want it to be more like a milkshake then you can add a NON DAIRY milk option like rice milk, almond milk or oat milk. Alternatively, add water for coconut water.
My clients who have followed these principles whilst doing my detox have felt lighter and brighter after just a week with improved energy, better digestion, clearer skin and often losing a few pounds in weight also. Here are some testimonials:
“I am so glad I have done this detox as it’s taught me some great new habits and recipes. I definitely think it’s worth doing every few months or so just to keep you on the healthy eating track. I have lost approx 6 pounds (needed to) and I’m feeling lighter during exercise and in my clothes.”
“I’ve never done a detox before but this has been great as it’s not been about starving yourself but introducing a better way of eating. Thanks for your support and the facebook page is great having ideas and encouragement from everyone.”
